Valerian Plant

Valerian Plant

Description

Valeriana officinalis

An upright perennial growing to around 1.5m with beautiful pinky white flowers that have a strong floral scent, although it is the root that is used medicinally. It grows in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist soils.

The root of this plant is traditionally used for sleeplessness, anxiety and tension. It also has an effect on the digestive system in a similar way and can help to calm a digestive system affected by stress.

The strong smelling root can be harvested after the 2nd or 3rd year and can be made into an infusion or tincture.
