Borago officinalis

A beautiful blue flowering annual that bees and insects will love in your garden! It can grow quite tall and bushy (60cm) and isn't very fussy about where it grows, but prefers a well drained sunny spot and poorer soils. It could be grown in a container, or to fill gaps in your garden. Save the seeds in the garden and it's also likely to self seed anyway.

In herbal medicine this was traditionally used as a cooling remedy for fevers, colds and coughs. In modern herbal medicine it is more used for it's potential adrenal restorative effects and GLA oil content, which may help regulate hormones. I use it energetically for supporting the heart and courage. Care must be taken to not use in large quantities over a long period of time, or in cases of known liver weakness due to potential PA content and effect on the liver.

The easiest and safest way to use is as a fresh edible flower in salads and as a garnish. The leaves and flowers can be made into a tea or tincture, or dried for later use. It's also a good one to make into a flower essence for it's emotional energetic properties of courage and bravery.
